Michael "Wizard" Young began racing in the summer of 1990. He joined the RC Car Club of Spokane {RCCCS} in May of that same summer. He has been a dues paid member since. At the 2010 Hank Perry awards ceremony, club president Dave Berard presented the "Wizard" with a Lifetime RCCCS Membership Certificate! At the time he was only the 6th active club member to receive this honor, and the first in over a decade! His first buggy was a Kyosho Turbo Optima Mid Special Edition 4 Mod. He ran it as a buggy, and later with a conversion kit and truck body. Although he was already a "Masters" age driver at 44 when he started racing, he earned 3rd place club championships in Stock Truck, 4 WD Modified Buggy, and in Modified Truck classes during the early years. In addition, he placed 3rd in the opening race at Spokane Indoor Raceway in the 4 Mod class and went on to claim the 3rd place season title at SIR in the same class. Hmm..sounds like he was the "3rd Place King"! In January 1991, he became the club Treasurer and Membership Chairperson. He held both positions for 10 years up to January 2001. "Wizard" has run in every Hank Perry Race
since 1991. In 2013, he participated in his 23rd
consecutive Hank Perry Race! Unfortunately .. in 2014 he
was slammed with double pneumonia! Lungs were in bad
shape. He is probably done now. But .. 23 consecutive
races is an awesome run!! Let's see who else can match
that! The 2006 Hank Perry was especially sweet for "Wizard". For the first time ever, he won the Masters Class Championship. He was 4 days away from turning 61 years of age! Not too bad for an old "Wizard"!! Too bad for the "young" drivers in their 40s who he beat, winning the last main by 1 complete lap over the rest of the field. |
